Is Your Gym Temperature Affecting Your Performance? The Science Behind Training in the Heat

Of course, everyone appreciates training in a cooler environment during the summer, but this upgrade isn’t simply about comfort. There’s a growing body of research showing that body temperature plays an important role in exercise performance, fatigue and overall training quality.


Heat and Performance

As you exercise, your muscles produce large amounts of heat. Your body responds by increasing blood flow to the skin and producing sweat in an attempt to regulate your core temperature.

As your core temperature continues to rise:

  • Heart rate increases
  • Cardiovascular strain becomes greater
  • Perceived effort increases
  • Fatigue develops sooner

Even if your muscles are capable of producing more work, rising body temperature can become one of the factors limiting performance.

In simple terms:

The hotter you become, the harder your workout feels.


The Science

One of the most well-known studies investigating this relationship was conducted by researchers at Stanford University.

Instead of cooling the entire body, researchers cooled the palms of participants’ hands between resistance training sets. Because the palms contain specialised blood vessels that are highly effective at exchanging heat, this helped lower body temperature during exercise.

The researchers found improvements in:

  • Total training volume
  • Number of repetitions completed
  • Strength gains over the training period

In one part of the study, participants improved bench press work volume by approximately 40%, while one-repetition maximum strength increased by around 22% over the intervention period.

While later studies have produced more mixed findings regarding specialised palm-cooling devices, the wider evidence remains clear: excessive heat increases fatigue and reduces exercise performance. Maintaining a cooler environment helps reduce thermal strain, particularly during longer or higher-volume training sessions.

While air conditioning alone won’t magically make someone stronger, it removes one of the unnecessary barriers that can negatively affect training quality.
